Is the pinion gear in the starter bendix suppose to move backwards easily and freely so as to mesh with the ring gear on the flywheel when the starter is engaged and the teeth don't match up exactly??
I think I might have found the problem why my JD=A starter is grinding and not engaging. I saw that when the teeth on the pinion hit the teeth on the ring gear on my A, the pinion gear doesn't move backwards so the teeth will mesh. I can push on the lever and push on the lever and the pinion will move backwards. If I push on the lever to hard, the starter engages with the teeth not meshed and the pinion gear will just grind on the ring gear.
Now if I push the pinion it with my hand, it will move backwards but it takes some effort to move it, it does not move freely, it feel very tight.
Is the pinion gear suppose to move freely, or should be tight like that?
