Yes Allen, I lived in a narrow valley, (1 mile wide) stands of spruce, pine,fir and mixed hardwoods on both sides. Ours was a spur line and train only traveled about 20 mph. As young teenagers we used to go 3 miles to village at train time to race it back on bicycle. I love that whistle, especially in the hands of an artistic operating engineer. The main railway link between Halifax and Montreal was about 15 miles away, as the crow flies. Most evenings we could hear the whistles on that line. That was a very busy railway during and imediately following WW#2. Those whistles are a bite like bagpipes in that its best not to be close. As for diesel smoke and air hornes, I dont think.
