My ZTR weighs almost 1300lbs before I get on it. Most of that weight is on the rear tires. I have 24x12x12 radial tires and they look more like an all terrain truck tire than a lawn/turf tire. I don't have any traction problems at all, not on hills, ditches, wet grass or anything. I can't see the need to add extra weight on the rear and not sure if it would help anything, I guess it could help if you have a light weight mower, are always spinning the tires though.
