Sorry, but even the simple car engine controllers around when I started working (early 80's) had 4K of ROM - much more complicated than a "generic programmable logic controller". Also, each system (divided sometimes by carline and sometimes by engine) had different hardware and software. Things are only starting to standardize now ...
