David: I have only been dog bit twice in my life. Both times it was older Blue Heeler dogs. They "nip" fast.
In the first case I had been petting the dog for a few minutes. He all of a sudden nipped my hand. Took 10 stiches to close my palm up. This dog was a friend's. I was at his farm weekly. So the dog knew me.
The second time I was visiting another friend. When I went to leave the house I walked in front of some bushes. The dog was under these yard bushes. He shot out and bit me in the back of the calf. No stiches but ruined a good pair of jeans.
Blue heelers, Boarder Collies, Australian Shepard's, and etc. Are all working dogs. They are usually smart and full of life. They are not good passive pets. They need to be around people for much of their day. They will get bored and cause trouble if left alone.
