Two models of the same tractors

Looked at a JD 2010 a while back and the position of the controls has been digging at the back of my mind since. Are there more than one model of this and other tractors that would change the position of the controls? These were pretty much unusable as a utility tractor, way low and to the rear. Very un-handy. When I go to buy another tractor is this common enough that I better keep this in mind?
