I sell more or less scaled down steam engines (live steam toys) we don't recommend them for kids under 10 (WITH adult supervision) for a pretty good reason. Basically most manufacturers shudder at the thought of younger kids playing with their products, the potential liability in today's culture is just too high. There are simply too many parents out there who are too (lazy is a pretty good word) to supervise their children properly (not accusing anyone mind you), and when something goes wrong look for someone else to blame. Some other concerns (for me) would be the weight (child could hurt himself lifting it), and the damage a larger scale tractor could do when thrown (the plastic stuff hurts enough). Beyond that, these anthropomorphised (read made into people) vehicles can help stir interest where there wasn't much before (That blue thingy "Thomas" comes to mind, it has been a boon to the tourist rail lines). Bottom line though is, it is your child, so its your choice, but please supervise carefully whatever you decide. Happy steamin (or putt-puttin)
