For the guy who asked... a Pop-up ad is a browser window that is opened 'behind' or hidden by your current browser window. As the name suggests, it has an advertisement in it.

When you close the active window, you get the advertisement in your face. The most 'infamous' of these is the 'X-10 Internet Camera' ad.

You can download a third-party 'pop up eliminator' Such as the one posted by another respondant.

Other options are to turn off scripting or make scripts prompt for an ok to run. ( these are settabe browser options in Internet Explorer )

I've found that probably 98% of web sites work just fine without scripting. Turning it off also makes it harder for 'rogue' websites to mess with your computer.
