The one who said 15/40 Shell was right.Oil has changed a lot since they wrote that service manual.Any oil for diesel engines has more detergent than gasoline oil to start with,so its not going to be a problem with that.What causes a motor not to crank when its cold is probobly the old starter is just not powerfull as the ones they make now,and cold cuts down the power the battery puts out,but I guess it could get cold enough in extreme conditions that you would want to run a lighter oil,but if it was all that cold you probobly dont want to ride the tractor anyway.I cant think of a reason that detergent would be bad,unless the engine allways had non-detergent oil in it and was full of sludge.Then you started putting detergent oil in it and it broke the sludge loose and plugged everything up.I doubt that it allways was run with non-detergent oil,but unless you allready know what condition the motor is inside,you might want to pull the valve cover off and see.If it has a lot of sludge in there,your best bet may be to run the oil the previous owner did.Just a thought.Gas engines need detergent oil to remove the soot from combustion.Diesel engines need higher detergent for the same reason.Non detergent oil is for lawnmowers or something that is inside a case that doesnt have combustion,or something like that.
