Think of the butterfly valve in a carburetor that lets air in. Now put that valve in your exhaust pipe, when you want to slow down close the valve so exhaust cannot escape. They really reduce wear on your regular brakes when you pull heavy loads or on steep grades. Also referred to as Jake Brakes and usually illegal to use them within city limits because of noise ordinances. Also, when installing one of these there are several changes that have to be made to the exhaust and heavier exhaust valve springs. And don't use it when your not loaded, it's like standing on the brake pedal! Steven
