My Dad told of a time he broke a fan belt on a 6 cyl Chevy pickup. He rummaged around in the back and found a screen door spring. He stretched it around the pulleys and drove it to town to get a new belt.

A friend of mine shimmed his rod bearings with strips of aluminun cut from a Coke can, This was on a 351 Ford.
