My wife's grandfather told me that in the 1950's, a friend of his come to visit driving a jeep. While he was there the jeep spun a rod bearing. He had to be back home on a certain date and the parts place wouldn't have the parts for him in time. So, they pulled the rod out and drove wooden dowels in the oil ports in the crankshaft and tape them real good so as not to lose oil pressure. Then they put it back together and he drove home with one less cylinder. But he made it!
