Jay, My father recently purchased a belarus 250. The tractor is configured to be 12 volt. The 250 has two 12 volt batteries connected in parallel. The result is 12 volts with a lot of amps. I do not remember the cold cranking amps for the batteries off the top of my head but I know they were pretty big. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 800 CCA each.
Provided that the tractor starts alright using 12 volts I would keep it that way. I would install a Delco Remy alternator out of a Chevy or GM car or truck. Easier to replace/get parts for. The 250 only needs battery power to start the tractor and for accessories like lights. The alternator is only used to recharge the batteries after startup. One oddity of the 250 is that the power cutoff switch on the left disconnects the ground from the battery not the hot wire.
