Remember, many tanks such as the M60 and m48 had air cooled Continental diesels which worked well. It can and has been done. Also, remember that diesels at low load or idle are internally air cooled in that their air/fuel ratios go way, way lean. Very different than gas engines. This is why they "slobber" after they've been idled any length of time.
