I looked into insuring the truck under farm insurance. Two problems. First, every policy I looked at had a 250 mile limitation. Second, the truck was to be used for in support of the farm. I talked to several insurance agents and told them honestly what I intended to do with the truck and none them hesitated to say that farm insurance would not apply. Taking a load of tractors to the show or pulling contest is not farm business. Insurance companies have no obligation to pay out in case of a loss if you are using the truck in a manor that you did not insure it for. Some guys think they will have to cover you until you get caught. Another gray area is antique insurance. If your truck is 25 years or older you insure it as an antique.
You don't need the IFTA sticker if you are not commercial. As far as going through different states it's best to call each state ahead and find out what they will want for you to go through. Some don't require anything. Others make you buy a permit that you can pickup at the first weigh station you get to in that state. Go to any truck stop and invest in one of those big road maps for truckers that includes all states. There will be a list of phone numbers for each state. (As well as other useful information) Once you've gone through each state and you know what it takes it's no big deal. You hear all these nightmare stories but I have never had any trouble.
I think a big part of successful trucking is looking good. Keep your truck clean. Loads secured properly and neatly. That way you won't draw attention to yourself. Let them fry bigger fish.
What kind of a truck do you have?
