question for Bill from up north

Bill, reading your response about hydraulics, i have a question you may be able to help with. I have a John Deere backhoe which uses a closed-center system with a variable displacement pump. Can i terminate the pump output with a plug and check pressure, with the pump shutting off because the pressure has been reached. I can screw in the destroke bolt and the pump shuts down, but i am not sure if that is the same as terminating the high side. I am having a problem with the pump running all the time, even though nothing is being used. Thanks...
