You're a good friend... and you tried, but you're right - Bob can't part with his stuff.
My Dad was somewhat that way. I totally cleaned and organized his garage a couple of times, to be helpful. He would always have it cluttered up with more stuff in no time.
The breaking point was when my mom slipped and fell on some cardboard boxes that Dad was "saving". Thankfully, she did not break any bones. All of us kids got on his case and insisted he get rid of some junk... or at least keep it tidy for safety reasons.
I think feeling guilty about mom's fall, helped him see the light a little bit, so he was a hair tidier... but he still wanted to save/keep everything. It's a tough thing to deal with.
