Run the engine until the carburetor is dry. As a small engine and outboard motor mechanic I regularly saw engines in the shop the would not start because the gas left in the carburetor either was no longer combustable, or it had varnished up the jets enough to screw up the mixture, or the needle was stuck in its seat. By all means, use a gasoline stablizing product. They work well. But run the carburetor dry regardless. Let the gasoline stablizer do its thing to the gas in the tank. And don't go adding WD-40 to the gas! It's a lousy fuel and won't help. If you've got stale gas, you can band-aid it by spraying about half a can of carburetor cleaner into it. That's for a small tank btw. A riding mower I'd suggest about a full can at least.
