Copper is used as a catylst for diesel to make it burn hotter. In an simple explanation, I don't want to quote books or type one here, the copper reacts with the diesel realigning the carbon molcules so that they attract oxygen, sort of positive charging them to do so.

So maybe some farmer knew about this?
