I have read in the John Deere board some things about this although I don't have a tractor that old. I believe the oil gets pumped from the oil pump through a tube that connects to the block right between the cylinders at the bottom where the block bolts to the main case. That block is drilled with that hole to the head and the tappets get oil from there. The way to get to that tube is to open the crankcase cover as this tube doesn't leave the main case.
