My 2 cents. Use wire. Had a 1968 Jaguar E with a 4.2 liter engine. The cotter pins in several rod bolts broke and found their way into the oil sump. No strainer on the oil pickup, the oil flow drew at least one pin into the pump ruining the outer shell. The replacement bolts were not castelated or drilled for wire. Never reuse cotter pins, too cheap to replace.
