Im not sure whether a man name cotter, invented the pin,but he must be long gone so we cant ask him.just about every pin i have seen has been installed with alot of overkill.when i put one in,i install it so the end to be bent is as accessible as possible and only spread it enough to keep the pin in place.i cut the end so it has enough protrusion to lock it in place, and if it has to come out again, the pin can be reused.
