We have a 75 kw automatic backup gen set for our poultry barns, in 2009 we had a bad ice storm with power out for over 10 days, the generator burnt just under 400 gallons of diesel during that time.
A friend had a 20 kw propane gen set wired into their house with 150 gallon tank, they ran out of fuel after 5 days.
We had a small 5.5 kw gas generated hooked to our house running essentials, lights, refrigerator, hot plate, water pump, tv. That little generator would burn 10 gallons of gas in 24 hours.
I've been watching for a deal on a 10 kw diesel generator for the house, that'll run everything but the electric heat and we have a gas log insert for that.
