Turns out the old bearing was not so bad but seems like the housing it sits in has some wear and that allows a little up and down play. So I tried out a J.B. Weld product called "Steel Stick". I don't consider I got a very good application but its all together now and I'll check it for play after driving a few miles to see if it improved anything.
