You will need to kill the acid in the metal with soda.Soda will not stop rust on acid eaten steel if any moisture is present. You will need to sandblast and repaint the part to stop rusting. The only permanent fix is to keep acid off the box. The absorbed glass mat batteries made by Optima and Exide sprial cell batteries will not put out any acid liquid or fumes which eliminates terminal or box corrosion. These batteries have a jelly electrolite and a valve system on the vents so the only way to get any acid fumes from them is to severly overcharge them. Here is a good site that describes this type of battery.I have used them for over 10 years and have had very good luck with them. http://www.batterystuff.com/battery/battery_tutorial.htm
