Not exactly. If the hydraulic system is in good shape, it will hold in the raised position. However, if the box was on the ground, you would have to engage the pto, put the transmission in neutral, and let out the clutch with an 8N to raise it. With live hydraulics, you could raise the box regardless if the pto was engaged or not; whether the clutch is in or out; regardless what gear the transmission is in.
