Reasonably common process, though it still takes a good operator. There are purpose-made backhoes modified to do it--the "cartopper" is one such--with guides on the stabilizers and a bucket attachment to keep from slipping while mounting, which can be done from ground level. Saw one working in Detroit a few years back beside the road, and traffic was moving slow enough we got to watch him work for several minutes. Same deal as yours--he'd empty a car then just pull himself to the next one and work down the line.
