In addition to what the other posters have said, you can use the figure to estimate how many gallons of fuel your tractor will burn per hour. A 50 horsepower tractor, would use 4.699 gallons of fuel, per hour. If your fuel costs $1.499/gal, your tractor will burn $7.044 worth of fuel every hour. This is of course, at full throttle & load. A diesel tractor, @ 50 hp, doing 17.97 hp-hr/gal on fuel costing $1.25/gal would cost you $3.478/hr to operate. Compare $3.48 to $7.04 and you will see the value of knowing your tractor's hp-hr/gal rating. BTW, the 50hp diesel tractor I used in the example is a JD "70".
