Apache, there is a big difference between lugging and idling. as soon as you add fuel it adds incrementally more force against the bearings. The bigger thing though is that as you know all diesels "rattle" to some degree when first started because the piston is not yet expanded to its close fitting hot size. Giving it that shot of fuel and speeding it up before the expansion takes place and clearances get to where they need to be, though unlikely, can cause damage.
