Lew is right. A cut out was later replaced by a voltage regulator on later era model tractors. Altanaters most generally have something built into them. A regulator controlled the charge of the generator. A cut out does this also but only manuelly by a switch operated by the operator. Your generator doesn't know when battery is fully charged and will burn something up if it keeps on charging when battery is full. Its like trying to put 6 gallons of water in a 5 gallon bucket. It just won't work. You got to control it by the switch when you got a cut out.
