I usually put them in about 4 or 5 steps apart. 4 steel, and then a wood. I always put in 6 1/2 foot post. And drive them in 3 nobs above the spade. Just a point of advice, put up 5 wires and not 4. A 4 wire fence is just going to cause problems in the long run. If you put the top wire at a reasonable height, then your wire spacing is to far apart. If you lower the top wire to accommodate the wire spacing, then your top wire is not high enough. It's a lose lose situation if you have problems. My 2 cents.
