The charge rate is controlled by the amount of current fed the field winding. That current is controlled by that switch. If you don't connect the field to something, no charge. If you connect it to the armature or battery with no dropping resistor, you will get full charge all the time which will either cook the battery or the generator or both. Get a switch.
