As a old retired mechanic, I found the rubbing block on new points has to wear in. It will do this in just a short while and close the point gap 1 to 2 thsnds. Therefore I usually set my gap a little wide and let it wear to correct gap. This also changes the timing somewhat so really the best way is set it correct to start with and re set the gap after a few hrs running. I set the wider gaps on units I might not see again for awhile. If you don't do one of the above the points will pitt when they wear & close up.
