A successful generator/regulator marriage requires complete compatibility with each other.
The original regulator was matched exactly to the generator, but it's long gone. Even the brand name regulators are "fit all" applications, no way they could offer exact replacements, the list would be extensive.
Also there could be a problem with the generator. There is a specification for the field amp draw. That needs to be mentioned to the rebuild shop. If the field is drawing too much amperage, it will arc the contacts quickly, shortening the life of the regulator.
And then there is the wiring. Check the wire harness carefully. Shorts, bad connections, if there is an amp meter, those are a common area of hidden high resistance connections.
And finally, if you just can't find a solution, there are alternators hidden inside a generator case. Keeps the original look but provides the dependability of an alternator.
