I have tried both ways on my Massey 44. I use a backblade for snow. I have new Firestones and they get excellent traction. In deep snow and hardpacked snow without chains is the way to go.

Near spring when it turns to ice I have to put the chains on to move the heavy stuff. But the tractor turns from a smooth, easy to maneuver rig, to a beast that chews up everything and jumps and bounces me all over.
