I don't farm, anymore. When I did we had a 720 diesel with the pump worked over.We also had a M that ran strong. Both pulled 4/14 plows no problem. In any conditions, neither ever needed 1st.We had problems with the tranny ,the rear end gears and one broken axel on the 720,too much hard work and the gears were only hardfaced. This was 1968 to1988,in this period we also replaced one bull gear and one clutch in the M. Both needed repairs in that twenty year period, both were close to the same HP as far as work goes. I would rather plow with the 720,liked that seat on a side hill. Would fit and plant with the M,and if your being truthful no John Deere man would ever claim to like backing up hay wagons with a John Deere over any IH,weare talking pre 60 here. Now I pull a Super M and I would pull a 720 if I had one but the fact is I would not do as well, they were just too heavy for the power they made.Yes there are JD's that pull and do good but it takes more $$$ to be competitive than IH,Oliver or MM. As far as the M rearend being weaker than a 70,I don't think so.I know of a couple 200 horespower Ms and the rearend is not the weak point.
