The Pioneer Zephyr hit the rails in the mid 1930s resulting in news much like did the Apollo Missions in the late 1960s/early 1970s.
Her 600 HP Winton Diesels, the ancestor of all Detroits, could power the lightweight aluminum and polished stainless steel Zephyr to speeds exceeding 100 MPH and did not need to stop for water every 100 miles or so.
The entire Zephyr weighed far less than did the S-1 locomotive sans tender.
For those of you who might be interested, the Pioneer Zephyr has been preserved and is on display at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago.
