john, nice looking tractor! I have been around Super Cs all my life. they sure are handy. tip for shifting into gear- if you hold the shift lever against the right front corner of the pattern (ahead of reverse, where there is no gear), you can hear the gears inside slow down and stop when you depress the clutch. avoids grinding when putting the tractor in gear. I doubt that the grinding you heard did any damage. I'm sure it wasn't the first (or hundredth) time that has happened in the last 65 years. enjoy.
