A general rule of thumb is most engines won't hold back as much load as they can pull. If you can't pull up a hill in 4th gear, don't try to descend that hill in 4th gear, the engine won't be able to hold the tractor back. Descend in the same gear as needed to climb the hill or a gear lower.
