A worn distributor will cause strange problems, and needs to be addressed.
The centrifugal advance needs to work too. That can cause idle problems and starting (kick back) problems.
Unless you are trying to keep this show quality original, I would go with electronic conversion. Today's ignition components have a bad reputation for being faulty out of the box. Electronic is more forgiving of a worn distributor, to an extent. It still needs a working advance though.
Do you have access to a vacuum gauge?
Might do an idle vacuum test. That engine uses a siamese manifold, the intake and exhaust cast as one piece. The exhaust can burn through internally causing poor idle. It would show up on a vacuum gauge as a vacuum leak.
