"Without a Field reference, the alternator "assumes" there is no voltage to your main bus, and will drive itself beyond its rated output and will burn itself out in doing so." This can be duplicated by removing the battery cable with the engine running in order to "test it". You can remove the cables from a generator to test the output. But as just been explained, this will not work with most alternator systems. So, have you recently disconnected the alternator to "test it"? oops.
