Believe it or not we survived before Carharts, Mucks (which are near worthless at those temps and crack) and miracle fibers. The point is that all the "record cold" isn't anything unusual to many of us. Wool, felt lined pack boots or Mickey Mouse boots, good mitts instead of stupid gloves, avoiding cotton products, it's all old school and it all works just fine.
