When I was in mid high school I thought I was going to become an engineer, have lots of money, hot cars, boats, airplanes and other expensive toys. Stay single until maybe mid 30s and do all sorts of women before that. Things didn't exactly take that path; I flunked out of college because of an undiagnosed learning disability and became an auto mechanic. Fell in love and married the girl I met at 16 when I was 21. After 26 years landed a job in an engineering department of a large company and did that for about 12 years (loved it). "Seemed" to be always trying to keep my head above water but along the way had enough of boats that if I never see one again it'll be too soon. Had enough hot cars and pure race cars to cure me of that. Had numerous airplanes (still have one). Paid off mortgage (and bought a second home) and all other debt decades ago. Learned that; while the mechanic job was tough and dirty, if one was half way decent at it (don't mean real good) there was no such thing as unemployment even through numerous recessions and that the engineering department was the first thing cut when times get tough. Went into forced retirement at 59 when company closed. Now retired with same wife of nearly half a century, more toys and stuff than I know what to do with, over 1M in all sorts of investments paying interest, forced to spend money or have it buried with me (no real heirs) and worrying about health so rushing to get more things done before the dirt nap. Life took a different road but the scenery wasn't bad along the way and the final destination turned out to be a lot better than I ever expected.
