Just an additional comment. The cut-out's that I have seen had a switch that controlled the cut-out that is mannuelly controlled by the operater. The voltage regulator replaced the cut-out and the switch system and it automattically adjusted the charge. It shut the charge off when battery was charged full. With the cut-out the operater had to control charge with switch to a certain extent. Either way if the points remain closed after shut down it will drain battery. A cut-out box and a voltage regulator look very simular. A cut-out I believe has 3 terminals and a regulator I believe has 4. I know a voltage regulator is real touchy about burning up when the generator is polarized wrong or the wires are wired up wrong.
