Nobody ever ran bars much longer that 16 inch where I came from, the big timber was all cut 100 years ago, by hand! I did buy a 20 inch for my dads old Jonsered 621, because we have some big ash for firewood that's starting to blow down. When our son bought his saw he got an 18 inch bar. I told him that will allow you to saw farther into the ground. I do find it easier to do an accurate job of falling if the bar reaches all the way through the trunk.
