Often it's not which oil but how regular you change it. There's a lot to that. When I was a bus mechanic, we tore down engines about once a week (lots of busses.) We ran Quaker State for the fleet and changed oil regularly. Pulling the valve covers off was a shock when I couldn't see the tops of the nuts on the rocker arm towers. They were completely burried in a pile of parafin wax. I wasn't real keen on QS after seeing that. Several years ago, the oil industry changed their manufacturing process to an ash process and whatever WAS the rule.... changed. I'm not sure who makes the good stuff and who makes trash, but I know both are out there. I stay away from the Chevron product line but like the Havoline products. Castrol is good by me too. A friend of mine kept real good records on his cars and found the Chevron oils broke down about 500 to 750 miles sooner than the others. I don't have any personal experience with it but when I have a choice, I buy another brand. I figgure the cheapest oil is better fresh than the best oil long after it should have been changed.
