Jay, I have a round baler that I use for my outside horses. It is a big 5x6 soft core. I stand them on end then drop a feeder ring around them. It works well, saves a lot of time, very little waste. The soft core bales are not as easy to handle and do not stack as neatly as hard round bales but they breath well and are softer for the horses the eat. I was skeptical when I started, but now all my outside horses are fed that way. If you stand a round bale on end in the barn it is easy to unwind the hay and many of the horse farms in my area are now bedding mare stalls with round baled grass hay.
