Sand paper will get it going, but is not the best. They make special points files to keep grit down & very parrallel surfaces & very smooth. When you sand it, you rough up the points, and they will oxidize all the faster the next time.

Many things can contribute to this, your tractor may get blowby past the distributor shaft which puts a lot of hot steamy air in there, or it may not breathe as well to adjust to different temps & condense inside, or the points on your Ford might get hotter than the distributor on the JD which cooks out the moisture..... Many different influences, I have a IH 300 that won't start on humid days, too damp for it, and an IH H that has the snot wore out of it & will about fire up under water - and should be about the same total electrical system. Who knows?
