Tire wear

How does the profile tread on a tractor tire wear out? Slippage on wet ground does not seem to me to be a sufficient friction source as water is a natural lubricant for rubber. At tractor operating speeds (1700 RPMs or less) it seems to me that no appreciable wear would occur for the life of the rubber in the tire from friction contact with the earth. How long does an 18.4 x 26 profile tire tread last?
