The long-time rule is that if you go up or down one heat range to compensate for an oil burner, you're probably OK. However, burning oil leaves a lot of carbon deposits, which are the biggest cause of "hot spots". These result in detonation, just like a plug that is too hot. I've found that the best compromise for oil burners is platinum plugs. The correct heat range plug won't foul. Not a substitute for a rebuild but can buy some time, safely.
